Joyce’s injuries eventually became so severe that she had to be placed in intensive care. She fractured her skull and had a cerebral hemorrhage, which forced her to be put on life support for twelve days. Joyce was thankfully able to move on, still regaining strength at this point.

The Joyce family now credits Max for saving her life, and her son even brought the 6-year-old champion a new pair of shoes as a thank you for her mum getting the help she needed .

The local mayor’s office also paid tribute to Max, going so far as to recognize him at a private party at his school.

“He was the leader. He was the champion and we’re proud of him,” the sheriff said at the ceremony. “If everyone was like Max, it would be a better world.”
