When a person in uniform claims he was just doing his job, it usually means he actually did too much.
It was exactly what Brighton CO Police Officer Nick Struck described as the latest heartbreaking confrontation that has since captured national attention. After arriving at the scene of a devastating car accident in which an adult couple and their four children were ejected from their car, Officer Struck’s fatherly instincts kick in.
The children’s father was killed instantly by the accident and Struck immediately thought about what he would want someone else to do for his young daughter in such a horrific situation.
He knew that although she survived the accident unscathed, his job of keeping the little girl safe was far from done.
The officer went above and beyond the call of duty to calm one of the toddlers, a shaken and confused two-year-old. In USA Today’s next report, Struck says he sang “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” to the little girl, something he does to get his daughter to calm her down.
After being caught seeing a photo of Officer Struck holding the little girl close to him, the photo has since gone viral. The moving photo captured a heartbreaking short moment during an unimaginable time of grief.
For every “bad cop” story you hear on the news, it helps to know that there are plenty of good men like Officer Struck.
