Olson also missed his students. The social studies teacher at Northridge High School in Leighton, Utah also coaches the basketball and football team, which makes him beloved by many students at the school.

While in Afghanistan, Olson would send his students photos of his trip. They returned the favor by sending care packages to popular teachers. Students even remembered her birthday with cards.

Olson once said that being a coach makes him more connected to his students. He explained that he went through many ups and downs with his players, which strengthened the communication between them on and off the pitch. This bond made the meeting even more special.

Olson decided he wanted to surprise the students when he learned he would be arriving home early.
