Arifa Sultana is a 20 year old young woman living in Bangladesh. She comes from a poor family, so raising one of her own can be difficult. She and her husband were overjoyed when they found out she was pregnant. However, they wondered if they had the financial capacity to raise a child.
Her husband is a hard worker, earning less than $70 a month. Despite their limited abilities, they would have given this child the best life possible.
In February 2019, Arifa gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Everything went well and she and her husband adjusted to life as parents. However, just 26 days after the birth of their son, Arifa began experiencing severe stomach pains.
She rushed to the hospital and found she was in labor for the second time. Everyone was in disbelief because her waters had broken a second time.
Arifa was born with a rare condition known as uterine or uterine dysfunction. She had a second, previously unknown uterus. She was pregnant with twins. Dr Sheila Poddar told the BBC she ‘didn’t know she had two more children. We had a caesarean section and she gave birth to twins, a male and a female’.
