It’s not every day that siblings make waves in the ice skating world, but that’s exactly what Sinead and John Kerr did. With their stunning performances and unique routines, the brother and sister duo quickly gained a following among ice skating aficionados across the globe.
Their most well-known routine has become somewhat of a cult classic, with fans raving about everything from their hair color changes to their costumes. In fact, the duo’s popularity has even spawned an internet discussion board devoted entirely to them.
“We were amazed to find out about the Sinead and John discussion forum, which is in Russian,” John explained. “A friend translated it for us and we were blown away by the pictures and discussions about our career.”
Despite their success, Sinead and John eventually retired from competitive skating in 2011. The duo, then in their early 30s, announced their retirement in a statement that was later reported on by the BBC.
“Although it has been printed in a couple of newspapers, we hadn’t actually — as yet — officially announced our retirement from competitive skating,” the statement read.
“However, we did indicate to the Scottish media that the worlds would have been our last competition and, although we were waiting until the end of the season to say anything for sure, we now feel we should say ourselves that we are not planning on continuing competing next season.
“Ours has been an amazing career and we feel very fortunate to have so many fantastic memories from our 10 years of competing together.”
Despite their retirement, Sinead and John are still putting their skates to good use. In their statement, they explained that they still wanted to skate in shows, but in a “less stressful environment.”
For fans of the Kerrs, it’s clear that their legacy lives on. With their stunning routines and unforgettable performances, Sinead and John have cemented their place in the ice skating world as true legends.
