Iyas quickly told her mother about the piles of newspapers and after several failed attempts to ring the doorbell and knock on the door, she called the local authorities to inspect the house. After the authorities arrived, it turned out that the child had saved his neighbor from a very bad situation.
During a search, authorities found the elderly woman trapped in the basement of her home. After taking a few words from her, they also realized she had been trapped in her small basement hallway for three whole days, CBS reported.
While his condition was bad, without the benevolent action of Iyas, his neighbor would have been worse. Hampton Deputy Police Chief David Hobbs explains what happened.
“It was just one of those weird incidents where the door closed behind her and she got stuck in the basement,” Hobbs told CBS reporters. Fortunately, when the neighbor was rescued, she said she was fine and even happy.
“The female was in good spirits even though she had been trapped in the basement for over three days,” Hobbs said in a statement. Once the woman was rescued from her basement, she was immediately sent to the hospital where she was treated for minor injuries. Who knows what would have happened to him if there hadn’t been despair!
“Hampton Police would like to thank the young boy for his careful observation and encourage residents to watch the elderly and vulnerable during these turbulent times,” the department said.
